RE: The tariff classification of an Ophthalmic Ultrasound System from Canada

Dear Mr. Cribb:

In your letter dated September 19, 1996 you requested a tariff classification ruling.

The Ophthalmic Ultrasound System to be imported consists of a Modified Power PC Macintosh computer and monitor, and an "I-Scan Ophthalmic Ultrasound System". Based on the information furnished, this system uses sound waves to determine the physical characteristics of the eye, including such data as distances between the cornea, lenses and retina.

The applicable subheading for the Ophthalmic Ultrasound System will be 9018.12.0000, Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the United States (HTS), which provides for electro-diagnostic apparatus... parts and accessories thereof... ultrasonic scanning apparatus. The duty rate will be 2.5 percent. This ruling is being issued under the provisions of Section 177 of the Customs Regulations (19 C.F.R. 177).

A copy of this ruling letter should be attached to the entry documents filed at the time this merchandise is imported. If the documents have been filed without a copy, this ruling should be brought to the attention of the Customs officer handling the transaction.

If you have any questions pertaining to this matter, please contact National Import Specialist Jacques Preston of this office at (212) 466-5488.
